February 2 Monday (continued)
The highlight for David on our visit to Caxias was the Catholic cathedral, Sao Pelegrino.

In 1893, an Italian family built a small wooden chapel on a piece of their property to honor their patron saint in Italy, Sao Pelegrino. The current cathedral was completed in 1953. The name was changed in 1983 to Sao Pelegrino e Nossa Senhora da Pieta when the Pope gave the church a replica of Michelangelo's statue.

David: Met a dear lady at the door who asked where we were from and welcomed us and allowed us to take photos. I asked
about the Roman numerals that were on the picture and text blocks on the
ceiling. She introduced us to Padre
Mario (retired). He said and sang the
verses of a funeral hymn. He said the
Roman numerals were the numbers of the 19 verses. He was very kind and gracious.

The highlight of this trip for Merl was a visit to a shop around the corner from the Cathedral. He found "the" hat - a real
Gaúcho cowboy hat - he had wanted to buy when we were here before and settled for something else. He also found another hat he was interested in, a fabric vented Gaúcho dress hat.
We drove to another area of town where one of the LDS chapels was located. We parked the car, gave a 'beggar' a little money (to keep an eye on the car), walked over to the church and then to a big grocery store - a nice, modern one. We purchased a couple of things and then walked to where we were going to have lunch.

The 'main' reason for coming to Caxias was to have lunch at a particular buffet that David and Ann liked. You could pay by the Kilo (weighed) or by a price for all-you-can eat The buffet was filled with all the wonderful fruits found here, variety of vegetables and salads; pastas, fish, chicken, and beef dishes; and deserts. The food was good, we all ate more than we needed to, and we waddled out of the restaurant. We were headed to a central park. Little did we know that we needed to walk down a long flight of stairs to get there. The day was hot, we were all too full, but we managed the stairs and a walk around the park before heading back to the car.
This is where the fun (frustration) began trying to find the streets on the map. I had hoped to find a good place to buy white shirts for the youth in the two branches, but didn't know where to go. We finally found our way to a big mall on the way to the freeway. The stores were all very nice and exclusive - and very expensive. So after walking around and looking at things, we all piled back into the car for the ride home. I think I must have slept most of the way because the time went very fast.
As soon as we arrived in Canela, Copas dropped us off at a grocery closest to the apartment to pick up French bread rolls and garlic. We had a dinner appointment with the Rodrigo and Danubia Macedo family and volunteered to bring the garlic bread to go with the spaghetti dinner. We packed up the pans, butter, and bread and caught the bus for a ride out into the country again - fifth house down on the right side of a dirt road after getting off the bus one stop after Pres. Marcos' home. Rodrigo is in the Branch Presidency (member for three months now). They have three daughters - Bruna, Jasmine, and ? - a three-year old. The Dos Santo Silva family also was there (Valtazar, Rosangela, and son Murilo). Danubia had prepared rice and beans and spaghetti with a wonderful sauce. Rosangela brought a rice pudding for dessert. After eating such a large lunch, we shouldn't have eaten anything else for the day - but it was all so good that we couldn't help ourselves (I paid for it - didn't feel well all night and next day).

We had Family Home Evening with the family and watched a video of Bruna's 15th birthday celebration (Quinceañera in Spanish). We looked at a beautiful wedding photo album for Rodrigo and Danubia who were married three years ago. Danubia joined the church almost two years ago, and Rodrigo three months ago. They are great people! Rodrigo gave us a ride home, and we arrived at 11:30 pm. These crazy hours are catching up with us!
