Porto Alegre

Dec.10 (continued)

Upon arriving in Porto Alegre, we gathered up our luggage and found an information station to get information on the shuttle to our hotel, Hotel Express Aeroporto.  The shuttle was requested, and we were checking into the hotel half an hour later – 5th floor, first door from the elevator.  Very convenient!  We could see the airport from our window, along with the freeway and busy streets below.  It was very cloudy all day, and rained hard in the late afternoon.  We skyped David and Ann (known as D&A for future reference) to let them know of our arrival and schedule for the next day.  They were planning to take a bus to Porto Alegre yesterday to greet and pick us up – but that didn’t work out.  We are on our own to make the trip.

After a good nap and after it stopped raining, we decided to walk around the busy streets near the hotel – mostly business, auto sales, repair type shops.  After walking several blocks to find something interesting, we entered a little pastry shop/convenience market (padaria) and selected some interesting looking cookie/pastry items which were weighed to determine the cost.  We sat at a table by the door to eat them along with a can of GuaranĂ¡, a carbonated drink made from a fruit grown in Brazil.  We really like it!

We walked back to the hotel in time to have dinner in the hotel restaurant, a casual buffet.  They had a nice salad bar along with a chicken/vegetable dish and some type of braised meat – didn’t try that one.  Rice is always served along with a pot of black beans.   Fresh sliced fruit and a bowl of diced, juicy fruits were Merl’s favorite.  Dessert was a flan in a caramel sauce that was wonderful.  Up to bed and a good night’s sleep.
